Teach with VIPKid

Learning in France

For VIPKid’s July Project, we are honoring our teachers around the world and learning what a teacher’s day-to-day schedule looks like from where they teach! VIPKid is dedicated to creating a global classroom and what better way to showcase and celebrate that than with our wonderful teachers!

For this first week, we are learning with Teacher Jessica! Teacher Jessica is based in France and has been teaching with VIPKid since 2018. Let’s see what she says about being an online teacher with VIPKid!

What does your day-to-day schedule look like as an online teacher with VIPKid?

“In France, the primary hours for teaching are in the afternoon. I usually wake up and have breakfast. The traditional breakfast here called tartine is my favorite. It is bread with butter and jam. I get ready to teach and set up my classroom. I teach in the dining room so every day I set up my classroom using a tapestry on the wall and I teach from our table. I typically teach about 8 classes every day. When I finish, my dog always demands my attention right away, so we go outside and play. However, I recently had a child, which has changed my routine quite a bit. Now I teach Friday, Saturday, and Sunday while my husband is home to look after the baby.”

What is your favorite memory as an online teacher?

“My favorite memory as an online teacher was the first time a student signed up for VIPKid because I taught their sibling. I taught a level 2 student for a few weeks and we always had so much fun in class together that her older sister signed up for classes as well. I taught them 3 times a week for over a year. It was amazing to watch them both grow up and improve their English so much.”

What is your favorite thing about being an online teacher?

“I love so many things about being an online teacher, but my favorite is the ability to connect with students from other parts of the world. It is an amazing experience to be welcomed into their lives from across the world.”

What brought or inspired you to teach online with VIPKid?

“I stumbled across VIPKID after I had been teaching ESL in refugee camps for over a year. I googled remote jobs and saw VIPKid and could not believe how perfect it was for me. It seemed too good to be true! It has gifted me the amazing privilege of being able to live anywhere while maintaining a stable income.”

What is something your students may be surprised to learn about you?

“My students would probably be surprised to learn that my favorite subject in school was actually history and not English! They also might be surprised to learn that I have taught them from so many different locations around the world because we travel a lot. The nice thing about using a tapestry as my background is I can put it up anywhere and make my students feel as though it is always the same.”

Thank you Teacher Jessica for inviting us into your classroom! It was so wonderful to see what it would be like to learn and teach from France!
