Ready to start teaching English online?

Teach with VIPKid

Meet Teacher Mandy, who lives and teaches VIPKid in Switzerland.

Tell us about the Swiss town where you live!

Nestled in the rolling pre-Alpen hills of central Switzerland is the small city of Willisau. My 2nd ‘heimatland‘ (hometown). Making your way down the main street from the train station, it is relatively unremarkable…until you reach the Untertor (gate) that leads into the most charming historic downtown. The street is lined with beautifully maintained and painted buildings, some of which date to the 1500s and earlier. Städtli is dominated by the huge Catholic church. The bells chime every 15 minutes – the old adage of losing track of time holds no meaning in Willisau. Our flat is just outside of Städtli.  The entire city is walkable, and a plethora of clearly marked hiking trails make it easy to escape into nature.

Why did you decide to start teaching with VIPKid?

In July of 2014, I met Lane Litz. She told me about the start up online company that she was working with. As an educator with some experience in online platforms already, I was intrigued, though it did take some time for me to finally take the plunge. I signed my 1st contract with VIPKid on May 29, 2015. I consider this to be one of the best decisions of my life, as it has led to so many opportunities for my family. We would not be where we are without it!

What do you love most about teaching?

Whether I’m working with students, teaching mock classes, or working with adults as a Mock Class Mentor and Teacher Mentor, being able to reach someone and see the proverbial ‘light bulb’ turn on is so rewarding.

What’s one thing we should know about living in Switzerland?

It is WAY more laid back and relaxed than you think!

Do you have any advice for others who want to teach from abroad?

DO IT! Find ways to become involved and immersed in the culture of the places that you are in.
