When your child is learning a new language, you want the very best for them to make sure they succeed. One of the most important things when it comes to that is having the right language teacher. It’s important that your child’s teacher is someone you trust.

When you think of a person you trust, what are some significant qualities you recognize in that person? Maybe it’s their kindness, their knowledge, or their experiences. Whatever it is, there’s something that draws you to that person to trust them.

So, what do we look for when trying to find the best-fit person to help our children learn new languages?

1. Personality

One of the biggest factors when it comes to learning is the relationship between your child and their teacher. Think about your teachers growing up––the teachers you learned the most from were probably also the ones you liked the most!

Of course, the skills and abilities we practice STRENGTHEN our learning, but the foundation of everything comes down to the bond between student and teacher. And speaking of trust: that bond is built on trust.

If your child doesn’t get along with their teacher, they may not perform to the best of their ability. But if they trust and respect their teacher, and like being in the classroom, their learning will skyrocket. For example, if the teacher can relate to your child’s interests or hobbies, they can use that to develop a bond and improve their learning!

2. Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications and experience are very important when choosing the right language teacher to educate your child. A qualified teacher will know the best strategies on how to work with students who are similar to your child’s age and ability.

For example, you may want to look for someone who has an understanding of your own culture, as they may be able to relate to your child’s everyday life. Perhaps the teacher has several years of teaching experience (but that shouldn’t be a deal breaker––some of the best teachers are brand new teachers).

Whatever your standards are, you want to ensure the teacher is qualified to teach your child––and we don’t blame you, it’s an important factor!

3. Motivation

Motivation is another crucial element when it comes to choosing your child’s language teacher. This is combining the personality traits, qualifications, and experiences all into one. Positive encouragement and correction fall into the category of motivation as well. It’s important that the teacher can keep your child interested so they want to keep coming back for more learning!

Teachers can motivate in the biggest (and smallest) ways. Maybe it’s something small like a virtual high-five or a compliment, a game, or something bigger like a full, positive report written about the child!

A motivating teacher will help to build your child’s confidence in the classroom, which will make learning more fun and encourage them to keep going. So find a teacher that’s going to give your child the boost they deserve!
