Language teachers will find that this is a critical part of their teaching practice: how to become better at correcting their students. Making mistakes is natural. I do it on a daily basis. But imagine trying to express your thoughts in a new language. Maybe you’d have a tendency to make even more errors when trying to speak in a second, third or even sixth language.

As VIPKid teachers work with English language learners daily, they are also correcting errors daily, if not every few minutes. So we were very excited to have Dr. Nikki Ashcraft, an associate teaching professor in the online M.Ed program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages (TESOL) at the University of Missouri, join VIPKid on to give a webinar on “Error Correction: Tips and Techniques for Language Teachers.” The webinar, featuring two of our very own VIPKid teachers (who are also M.Ed students at Mizzou too!) shared with us a spectrum of error correction strategies. What are the different types of direct and indirect error correction techniques? Have you heard about metalinguistic error correction strategies before? It was a first for me, and I found it very illuminating!

What are some tips and thoughts around when to use each strategy? Having a more nuanced and deeper understanding of error correction is critical not only for supporting students to learn productively and with encouragement, but perhaps also to communicate well with parents on the types of error correction strategies that you’re using with their children.

While the webinar may be over, you can still sign-up for a free account with, and watch the recording here.
